Cenfri seeks to utilise our expertise in a variety of financial sectors, in advising the development of inclusion-friendly financial sector policy and regulation. We therefore seek to position the work we do on any specific component of the financial sector within the broader financial policy and regulatory framework, and within a clear understanding of market dynamics and trends.

Cenfri also follows a 'making markets work for the poor' methodology in the financial sector and, therefore, seeks to leverage all players (including commercial FSPs) towards providing financial services to lower-income households. While much of our work focuses on policy and regulatory outcomes, we do this in support of private financial sector development.

Some of our work in this area includes:

  • Cenfri was commissioned by the FinMark Trust to write an exploratory note on the likely impacts of the Regulation of Interception of Communications Act (RICA) on mobile financial services and financial inclusion.
  • Cenfri, in partnership with Bankable Frontier Associates (BFA), have been contracted to support the development of strategies for the Enhancing Financial Innovation and Access (EFInA) initiative in Nigeria.

  • Cenfri has been commissioned by the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI) to compile case studies on the experiences in Brazil, Kenya and South Africa regarding the implementation of international standards set by the various Standard Setting Bodies while meeting their financial inclusion objectives. Cenfri is furthermore responsible for a cross-country summary document based on these cases studies, as well as cases studies of Mexico and the Philippines. These case studies will be one of the key deliverables of the Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI) for the 2011 G20 Summit in Cannes.
