Update on microinsurance innovation in Brazil (2011)

These case studies on microinsurance innovation in Brazil forms part of a series of case studies on alternative, innovative microinsurance distribution models prepared for the International Labour Organization’s Microinsurance Innovation Facility. These case studies are focused on retailer, utility and telecomunications distribution of microinsurance. The first case study covers the partnerships between Mapfre, an insurance company, and Casas Bahia and Vivo, a white-label goods retailer company and mobile phone operator. The second case study covers two partnerships, brokered by AON Affinity Brokers, between QBE and Brasil Telecom and ACE and utility company AES Eletropaulo.

Retailer microinsurance distribution in Brazil
This case study focuses on the retailer-based distribution channel and, more specifically, the role that Mapfre Seguros and its retail partners have played in the development of this model. The case study maps the role of the underwriter, Mapfre, and its distribution partners – low-cost appliance store, Casas Bahia, and cellular telecommunications provider and retailer, Vivo.

Utility and database microinsurance distribution in Brazil
This case study focuses on a utility and a database distribution channel and, more specifically, the unique role of a broker, AON Affinity do Brasil, in the development of these channels. The case study also maps the roles of the underwriters (QBE and ACE) and the distribution partners: the utility company AES Eletropaulo, and telecommunications company, Brasil Telecoms.
