Cross-border and domestic money transfers play a critical role in the financial strategies of low-income households and present many opportunities to extend financial inclusion.

Some of Cenfri's work in this area include:

  • Cenfri managed a study, funded by the FinMark Trust and conducted by Saul Kerzner, that investigated the Johannesburg-Zimbabwe remittance corridor.
  • Cenfri published a note based on a mystery shopping exercise to investigate the barriers facing Zimbabwean migrants in South Africa wishing to send money home through the formal sector.
  • Cenfri performed a scoping study on the landscape of remittances in Zambia for FinMark Trust Zambia
  • Cenfri managed a study funded by the FinMark Trust on the first mile challanges to cross-border money transfers. The consulting firm eXactConsult mapped the flow of funds in a cross-border money transfer transaction and investigated the so-called first mile challenges, from a market perspective, in sending money from South Africa to five SADC countries (Botswana, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe). As a follow-up, eXactConsult conducted a study on the “last mile” (recipient end) for money sent from South Africa to Zambia, also managed by Cenfri.
  • Cenfri managed a study funded by the FinMark Trust to scope the market for retail payment service in South Africa. The consultants, InsightWorx, conducted a comprehensive market scoping exercise of retail payment services in South Africa and developed a typology of models.
  • Cenfri is managing a regional scoping study funded by the FinMark Trust. The consultants, Bankable Frontier Associates, will conduct a regional scoping study of retail payment services in Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
